Colocalization of Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide and Substance P in the Purkinje Cells in the Colchicine-Treated Gerbil

The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)and substance P (SP) in the gerbil cerebellum by immunohistochemical method. After injection ofcolchicine into the lateral ventricle, CGRP and SP immunoreactions were detected in Purkinje cells andtheir dendrites. We also examined the colocalization of these neurotransmitters in Purkinje cells inconsecutive sections. About 20% of CGRP immunoreactive Purkinje cells colocalized with SP containedPurkinje cells in the gerbil cerebellum. These results suggest that CGRP and SP may have a potential forplaying a complex role in modulating circuitry in the cerebellar cortex of the gerbil.
