Szczecin, Poland, ISSN 0749-0208 Permeable breakwaters are now taken into account as an alternative tool to mitigate rip-currents to an acceptable level. The steel-type breakwaters are also favored from the point of view of coastal environment since they are removable during off season. At Haeundae Beach in Busan, which is located on the southeastern corner of Korean Peninsula, draws one million visitors annually and more than 100 people were swept away by the fast-moving seaward current and rescued every year. The beach management authorities found that rip currents often occur at three spots depending on the wave angle of incident waves. There are five reefs in a short distance from the beach, resulting in an alongshore wave height variation due to wave refraction. We examine the mitigation effect of steel-type permeable breakwaters through the numerical experiments.
