This research was to understand the mobilities of heavy metals in Kwimyong abandoned mine tailings through measuring the fractionated heavy metals with a sequential extraction procedure. Tailing samples were collected from a tailing dam at different depth and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. The pH of tailings at different depth ranged from 4.7 to 5.7 and contents of total organic carbon were 0.7 ~ 0.8%, respectively lowered than background soil. The concentrations of heavy metals in the tailings were in the orders of Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd. Compared to total concentrations of heavy metals, mobile fractions were in the range of 3.0~39.0%. Heavy metal fractions and mobilities were different from tailing dam profiles but Cu and Pb concentrations of labile form at the surface of Kwimyong abandoned mine tailing dam were higher than these at the bottom. A prompt countermeasure is urgently needed to prevent surface in the tailing dam from water and wind erosions.
