Balancing Hole Design in Terms of Magnetic Drive Centrifugal Pump Efficiency and Axial Thrust Using CFD Analysis

In this study, CFD analysis was conducted on a balancing hole design to reduce the axial thrust of a magnetic drive centrifugal pump. A magnetic drive pump has a leak-tight seal structure, and owing to this structural feature, the flow path generated when a balancing hole is employed is very long. Consequently, the balancing hole has a significant influence on the performance of the pump; therefore, its appropriate design is very important. Therefore, this study considered the balancing hole diameter and the application angle as the balancing hole design parameters for maximizing the pump efficiency and minimizing the axial thrust. Based on this study, it was confirmed that the diameter and the application angle of a balancing hole are very important design variables that are directly related to the performance of a magnetic drive centrifugal pump.
