The legal legacy of Olympic Winter Games: PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and the Institutionalization of the Lex Sportiva in South Korea

The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 not only left a significant mark on the global sporting landscape but also triggered a transformation in the legal framework governing sports in South Korea. This paper explores the legal legacy of the Olympic Games, particularly focusing on the concept of Lex Sportiva and its institutionalization within the Korean national sports legal systems post-PyeongChang 2018. By examining the evolution of Korean sports law before and after the Winter Olympics, this study sheds light on the critical juncture presented by PyeongChang 2018 and its legal legacy of Lex Sportiva enduring impact on the South Korean legal infrastructure supporting sports. As PyeongChang 2018 Olympics significantly affected the national sports legal system in South Korea, principles derived from Global Sports Law, including autonomy of sport, fairness, governance, and sport integrity, have found a home in domestic sports law through the formalization or legislation of the Lex Sportiva. © ACAPS, 2025.
