초록

Lee, KyoungNam. 2015. Diverse Concepts of Grammar and Changes in Grammar Instructions in English Education. The Journal of Studies in Language 31.2, 357-376. This paper aims to find the pedagogical implications of the role of grammar in English education by reviewing changes in the language instruction trends. Such a review shows the connection between the past and the present with regard to the attitude towards grammar instruction, reflecting the diverse concepts of grammar over time. With a discussion on the limitations of grammar translation methods and communicative language teaching, this paper suggests that form-focused instructions which are integrated into meaningful communicative context be encouraged, considering the reality of the Korean educational situation. Also, language teachers should take an eclectic approach according to their teaching objectives or students’ needs. (Kangwon National University)
