A study of college students' gender egalitarianism and attitudes toward marriage by gender and year

This study aimed to examine college students' degree of gender egalitarianism and attitudes towards marriage by gender and year, and measure gender egalitarianism's relationship with attitudes towards marriage. The study's participants were 356 college students in their 1st-4th year of study (246 males, 69.1%; 110 females, 30.9%). Regarding gender egalitarianism by gender, male students showed greater gender egalitarianism than female students in professional life (t = -.3.73, p < 0.000) and school life (t = -.3.46, p < 0.000). Regarding gender egalitarianism by year, significant differences were found in home life (f = 3.42, p = 0.020), professional life (f = -.14.46, p < 0.000) and school life (f = 15.02, p < 0.000). Regarding attitudes towards marriage, female students (t = 4.44, p < 0.000) and first-year students (f = 2.58, p=0.050) were significantly different. Additionally, more gender-egalitarian students tended to be more conservative towards marriage. ©2016 International Information Institute.
