초록

It has been more than 50 years since Celestin and Atkinson separately developed rigid tube stents and placed them for the treatment of patients with dysphagia. Stent manufacturing technologies, together with their delivery system technologies, have improved greatly, and esophageal stenting is now an important palliative treatment option for both malignant and benign esophageal strictures. We will summarize the indications and contra-indications of the esophgeal stenting, the procedures of the stent placement and removal, and review the history of the esophageal stent development and the characteristics of the esophageal stents currently on commercial use.
